About this series
This is the first post in a series of fiction about a man trapped in a room, with his memories lost that tries to re-learn the world from a LLM.
Hi, my name is CrossNox. Today I woke up in this room I’d never before been in. The naked walls expose the concrete and some rebar which is already showing signs of decades passed by.
A steel door is the only thing breaking the monotony of the gray walls. There are no windows, and light dripping from cracks in the ceiling is the only thing that prevents total darkness from overtaking. Earlier today, I heard some rumbling in the door, and food had been put in a drawer at the bottom. That’s all I had.
That, I can accept. But what intrigues me the most is you. Across the door, embedded in the wall, there’s this terminal with a prompt and a keyboard. No instructions, no examples. Just a prompt. So, I’m writing this hoping that someone (or something) is on the other side and can answer my questions.
I have no memories of who I am, how I got here, or what my life was like before this strange morning.
Who are you?
Hello CrossNox, I am Assistant, a large language model trained by OpenAI. It sounds like you are in a very difficult situation and I am here to try to help you in any way I can. It’s understandable that you have a lot of questions and concerns right now. Is there anything specific that you would like to know or talk about?
Do you know how I got here?
I’m sorry, but I don’t have any information about how you came to be in the situation you described. Without more context, it’s difficult for me to say anything for certain about your circumstances. Is there anything else you can tell me about your surroundings or what has happened to you since you woke up in this room? It might help me to better understand your situation and how I can assist you.
Not really. The room is very plain. There’s not much else to add to what I’ve said before.
I have no recollection of what happened, to be honest. Perhaps my memory will come back in a few days.
You said you are a “large language model trained by OpenAI”. What does that mean? I don’t know what or who is OpenAI. Or a large language model, for that matter.
OpenAI is a research organization that works on developing artificial intelligence technology. A language model is a type of machine learning model that is trained to generate natural language text that is coherent and reads like it was written by a human. As a large language model, I have been trained on a very large dataset of text, which allows me to understand and generate a wide range of human language and to respond to a variety of questions and prompts.
I’m here to provide information and assistance to people who have questions or need help with something. Is there anything specific that you would like to know or talk about?
So, if I understand correctly, you are not a human? You are some kind of machine that can reply to my messages and interact with me like a human.
I want to know about the world. I seem to have forgotten most of my past life. Some things I remember, like “light” and “concrete”, but not much else. I have clothes on, those I know. But how is it outside?
That’s correct, I am not a human. I am an artificial intelligence program designed to assist with a variety of tasks and answer questions to the best of my ability.
I’m sorry that you have lost your memories and are unable to remember much about your past life. It must be very disorienting and unsettling to wake up in an unfamiliar place with no knowledge of how you got there.
I wish I could provide more information about your surroundings and what is happening outside the room you are in, but unfortunately, I don’t have any specific information about your location or the situation you are in. Without more information, it’s difficult for me to say anything for certain about what is happening outside or what the world is like. Is there anything else I can help you with or answer questions about?
I don’t know. I’d feel really comforted if you just told me anything about the outside world it’d be really comforting. Whatever you feel like telling me about.
I understand that you are feeling anxious and uncertain about your situation, and it can be helpful to have some information and context to help make sense of things. However, without knowing more about your location and the specific circumstances you are in, it’s difficult for me to provide any information that would be particularly relevant or useful to you.
In general, the outside world is a diverse and complex place, and there are many different things that one could say about it. There are countless cultures, societies, and environments, and each person’s experience of the world is unique. If you have any specific questions about the world or anything else, I would be happy to try to help you to the best of my ability.
Can you pick a random environment and tell me about it?
Sure, I can try to describe a random environment for you. Let me see…
Imagine a dense rainforest, with tall trees that reach up towards the canopy, where the leaves form a thick green roof overhead. The air is humid and warm, and the ground is covered in a layer of fallen leaves and debris. The underbrush is dense with shrubs, ferns, and other small plants, and there are many different types of animals living here, including monkeys, parrots, snakes, and spiders. The sound of chirping insects and the distant calls of animals fills the air. It is a vibrant, alive place, full of life and diversity.
I hope that this description gives you a sense of what one type of environment in the world might be like. As I mentioned before, the world is a very diverse and complex place, and there are many different types of environments that one could encounter. Is there anything else you would like to know about this or any other topic?
Trees? Those sound familiar, but can you explain me how they look?
Certainly! Trees are large plants that are characterized by a single, main trunk and a canopy of branches and leaves. They come in many different shapes and sizes, depending on the species. Some trees are tall and slender, with a narrow canopy and a straight trunk, while others are shorter and more spread out, with a wider canopy and a more gnarled trunk.
The leaves of a tree are usually green and are attached to the branches. They are responsible for photosynthesis, which is the process by which a tree converts sunlight into energy. The bark of a tree is the protective outer layer that covers the trunk and branches. It is usually rough and textured, and its color can range from light to dark brown, depending on the species of tree.
Trees are an important part of many ecosystems, as they provide habitat and food for a wide variety of animals and they help to regulate the local climate by providing shade and absorbing carbon dioxide from the air. Do you have any other questions about trees or anything else?
Oh, I have so many questions about all of this.
What are plants? Are there other kinds of plants besides trees?
These leaves you talk about, can they not be attached to the branches?
What is sunlight? And what does energy look like?
How do they provide food? Can I eat the branches? Or just the trunk?
Plants are living organisms that are classified as part of the kingdom Plantae. They are characterized by their ability to photosynthesize, which means that they are able to convert sunlight into energy using a process called photosynthesis. This process involves the absorption of light energy by pigments in the plant’s cells, which is then used to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose (a simple sugar) and oxygen. The glucose is used by the plant as a source of energy, and the oxygen is released into the air as a byproduct.
Trees are just one type of plant. There are many other types of plants, including herbs, shrubs, grasses, ferns, and flowers. Each type of plant has its own unique characteristics and adaptations that allow it to thrive in different environments.
Leaves are typically attached to the branches of a tree, but in some cases, they may be attached to the trunk or to the underground part of the plant. The leaves of a tree are usually green in color because they contain chlorophyll, which is the pigment that is responsible for photosynthesis.
Sunlight is a type of electromagnetic radiation that is emitted by the sun and is made up of a spectrum of wavelengths. It is the primary source of energy for life on Earth, as it provides the energy needed for photosynthesis. Energy is a term that is used to describe the ability to do work or to produce change. It can take many different forms, such as kinetic energy (the energy of motion), potential energy (stored energy), and thermal energy (the energy of heat).
Trees provide food for a wide variety of animals in many different ways. Some animals eat the leaves, branches, or bark of trees, while others eat the fruit, nuts, or seeds that are produced by the tree. In some cases, animals may eat insects or other small animals that live on or within the tree. As a general rule, it is not recommended to eat the branches or bark of a tree, as they are often tough and not very nutritious. However, some trees do produce edible fruit, nuts, or seeds that can be eaten. Do you have any other questions about plants or anything else?
This is too much to process. I think I’ll need to ask a few more questions to understand more of this.
What are organisms? You said plants are living organisms, are there non-living organisms? What are those called?
What is the sun? How does it direct this so-called “electromagnetic radiation” toward plants?
I’ll ask you later about Energy. It sounds like quite a handful.
You mentioned animals before, what are those?
If I understood you correctly, animals eat other animals or parts of trees, which in turn create energy from photosynthesis. Do plants let animals eat them voluntarily?
An organism is a living being that is made up of one or more cells and that is capable of reproduction, growth, and development. Organisms can be either living or non-living, depending on whether they possess the characteristics that define living things. Living organisms, such as plants and animals, are characterized by their ability to grow, reproduce, maintain homeostasis, respond to stimuli, adapt to their environment, and evolve over time. Non-living organisms, such as rocks and water, do not possess these characteristics.
The sun is a star that is located at the center of the solar system. It is the primary source of energy for life on Earth, and it emits electromagnetic radiation (light and heat) in all directions. The Earth and the other planets in the solar system orbit the sun, which means that they are constantly exposed to its electromagnetic radiation. This radiation is what makes it possible for photosynthesis to occur, as it provides the energy that plants need to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose.
Animals are a group of organisms that are characterized by their ability to move and to sense their environment. They are heterotrophic, which means that they cannot produce their own food and must obtain it from other sources. Animals can be found in a wide variety of environments, and they can be classified into many different groups based on their characteristics and behaviors.
Plants do not have the ability to move or to defend themselves, so they cannot “voluntarily” allow animals to eat them. However, many plants have developed a variety of adaptations that allow them to attract animals to their flowers or fruit, or to protect themselves from being eaten. For example, some plants produce nectar or other sweet substances to attract insects or birds, which can help to pollinate their flowers and disperse their seeds. Other plants produce thorns or toxins to deter herbivores from eating them. Do you have any other questions about this topic, or is there something else you would like to know about?
I don’t know what a star is. How does the sun look?
Do plants need food as well or is photosynthesis enough for them?
I don’t get the point of attracting animals to be eaten. Why would plants prefer having their seeds dispersed rather than live? I mean, other plants clearly do that by producing “thorns” and “toxins”.
A star is a celestial object that is composed of gas and dust and that is held together by its own gravity. Stars are the most luminous objects in the universe and are capable of generating huge amounts of energy through nuclear fusion, which is the process by which the hydrogen in their cores is converted into helium. The sun is a star that is located relatively close to Earth, and it is the star that is most important to life on our planet, as it provides the energy needed for photosynthesis and helps to regulate the climate.
The sun is a large, glowing ball of hot gas that appears in the sky during the day. It is about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers) away from Earth and is much larger than our planet. It is so far away that it appears to be just a small, bright dot in the sky, but it is actually much larger than Earth and has a diameter of about 864,000 miles (1.4 million kilometers). The sun is made up of hot gases, including hydrogen and helium, and it is surrounded by a thin atmosphere called the corona.
Plants do not need to eat food in the same way that animals do, as they are able to produce their own food through photosynthesis. However, plants do need certain nutrients and minerals in order to grow and thrive, and they get these nutrients from the soil, water, and air.
Plants have developed a variety of strategies to ensure the survival and reproduction of their species. One of these strategies is to attract animals to their flowers or fruit, as this can help to pollinate their flowers and disperse their seeds. By attracting animals to their flowers or fruit, plants can increase the chances that their pollen will be carried to other plants of the same species, which can help to increase the genetic diversity of the population.
Am I also held together by my own gravity? What is gravity?
You said the sun is so far away, yet relatively close. How come?
If plants get energy from the sun, do they also get the smell of hydrogen being converted into helium?
I’d like to hear about how soil, water, and air look outside from here. Where do plants get these things from?
You’ve talked about flowers a few times now. They sound eerily familiar… how do flowers look?
